Let’s face it, your employees are the ambassadors of your business. They’re the faces your customers see when they walk through your doors and the reason your customers come back to your shop. Your consumers can go to ANY vape shop in town but, you want them to choose you. Every shop essentially carries the same products; hardware, juice, and accessories. The only difference is how you deliver your level of service.

First and foremost, there’s a difference between hired help and skilled laborers(specialists). Your employees should be the latter. You can assist in the growth of an employee through education. Offering opportunities for employees to be properly trained on all hardware, juice, and especially battery safety is just a start. Education will empower your employees and allow them the confidence to sell the products on your shelves. It’s safe to say not all employees will know everything about your entire stock, but, building an efficient team leveraging one another’s strengths and weaknesses is a best-case scenario. For example, one employee may be a juice connoisseur and another may be a master builder and is very knowledgeable regarding attys and devices. They complement each other and can work as a team without competing with each other. Your employees, instead, teach the other person what keywords are used, the good and bad of each product, and become more confident with the product.

Employee meetings are a great way to catch everyone up with upcoming events, sales evaluations, goals, and team building. Not everyone has had experience with retail and simply may not understand that sales should be expected during certain times of the year (4th of July, Veteran’s Day, Black Friday, etc) and this is an opportunity to keep your employees in-the-loop. Sales evaluations and goals are something that needs to be discussed and every employee must be aware of. Team meetings are the perfect place to showcase your sales superstar and help the struggling salesman by recognizing different areas of their growth. With all your employees working different shifts, it’s sometimes difficult for associates to get to know each other. Employee meetings promote team building. Grab a pizza, a box of donuts, or order in some sandwiches and get connected with your entire team!

Happy employees stay longer and work harder. According to Small Business Chronical, “employee replacement costs can reach as high as 50-60% of an employee’s annual salary”. Recruiting and training take time and money. Happier employees offer higher productivity. Sometimes satisfying your people takes going slightly above and beyond. For example, offer employees bonuses for positive results, incentives to work harder and achieve higher goals and shared percentages for business ideas and department buildouts. Therefore, ensuring your employees have the tools to do their job in an environment that is positive, with opportunities that are lucrative. A high turnaround in employees makes your customers feel uncomfortable. Your customers build relationships with your employees and come back time and time again because of them.

The experts will say employee retention is important due to cost effectiveness, it maintains performance and productivity, enhances recruitment and increases morale. We say that is true, but, it keeps your doors open and customers happy, that’s the best reason!
